4/10 from The Melon, and I agree with pretty much everything he says. The closing comment about how there's often a mediocre, slow-paced song on exciting albums to provide some variety, but that that song is the only one The National has been trying to write is perfect. Sums them up, to me.

Surprisingly he doesn’t mention Mike Mills or the supportive film once. That’s a huge part of this collaborative project. After Sleep Well Beast the band felt in a rut and were going to take an extended break. This could have resulted in a 4-5 year wait. Now the National have injected a lot of life into their sound this go around. His last line is something that was uttered repeatedly around 2007-2009 by many critics. It’s an old take.

I don’t mean binge listening either. The beauty of music is to digest it over time. It’s very rewarding that way. Take that guy in the video. I’ve read and seen features about him. He freely admits he rips thru music too quickly to actually give honest opinions. He’s just over saturated with stuff to listen to, talk about and create his videos.

I've tried multiple times to get into them, seeing as the last generation of indieheads seemed to love them and even put them up there with Arcade Fire. I don't see it. I like the odd tune like Turtleneck, but overall they're just a bland, MOR, sad-indie-by-numbers band for me. Bit of uptempo drumming, few minor chords on the piano, moan about something instrospective, done.

You are probably right that this band isn’t for you if you didn’t like Alligator or Boxer or High Violet. Their big run from 10-14 years back. Fantastic stuff. Nobody writes better from the perspective of a middle class man in America. Matt lyrics are always fascinating and unusual.

I feel I could write his songs (well, all his song) in about ten minutes. Tea break included.

I got into The National with Boxer in 2007 and this album is still my most favourite album by them until to this day, followed by Alligator and High Violet. Fantastic stuff indeed. Trouble Will Find Me is my least favourite The National album. Sleep Well Beast was alright, but with this new album "I Am Easy To Find" they gave us nice surprise.

Absolute my all time favourites:
"Virginia EP" is my favourite as well. I bought it after their gig at Paradiso in 2010 when they had to start the gig very early because the Dutch national team were playing a semi final for the world cup. They all dressed up in orange completely. As soon as they finished the gig, the big screen appeared behind the stage to play the match live.
I'm glad that I saw them in a smaller venue back in time.

It was great to see them evolve over time. Their albums from 2001 and 2003 were vastly different From Alligator and Boxer. Little by little the band was beefing up their sound, Matt was discovering himself as a writer and people were starting to take notice. It’s been a fun ride. They got started so late in life too with the band. Early 30s. They all had regular jobs before hand like at ad agencies and creative art directors. They gave it all up to be something more bold.

This has somehow become my personal theme song. Speaking of albums, Boxer and Alligator slowly made their way into my all time top 20. Looking forward to see them in Frankfurt in a months time AND in Berlin in November.

I use to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders. Our Matt did it again at Lowlands and not only with this song this time, but quite often. He got into the crowds, out of tent, reached the bar, grabbed beer, completely out of sight during a couple of songs. Nightmare for roadies and security. I only had to tell my better half who sat in the other side of room "oh dear, he did it again", then he knew what I meant. Kate Stable joined the band and she's done a great job. Looking forward to seeing them sometime very soon again.

Lennon2217 and durk, have you watched this yet? Beautiful acoustic version of one of my favourite, yet very underrated The National song.
