Because they announced they are doing a new series i rewatched : Life On Mars / Ashes To Ashes 10/10 all night long I never watched Ashes To Ashes for some reason (perhaps as I liked the finality of Life On Mars, and the 70s Manchester setting is far more compelling than an 80s London) but Life On Mars is one of the best shows ever. I’d hope John Simm returns if there’s a new one. Although if it were ‘real time’ the show would be approaching the 1990s now rather than the mid-70s!

The first season is a bit iffy but the last 2 are quality. And it explains everything, references Sam etc. The main role (Keeley Hawes) is the police officer Sam sent his files to analyse at the end of LOM. So she knows everything about his case Watch it mate! It's on iPlayer and Netflix at the minute

The first series of Killing Eve. It started off good, first two episodes were nice, but around the time when Harley Quinn girl just started stabbing people in the middle of packed nightclubs it began to descend into schlocky writing and what seemed like bad fan-fiction of its own characters. Just lost the feeling of suspended disbelief somewhere, and most of the second half is carried by Jodie Comer's performance.

A pale shadow of the first.

I love Killing Eve. I even liked s3 and many people are shitting on it Jodie Comer is such a great actress. You may find some old post of mine on this thread (or the thoughts thread) praising her. She's truly amazing

She's truly amazing Jodie was the only thing making the first series watchable once the writing went off the rails, for me. She is spell-binding. I'd love her to be the next Doctor, she has more charisma in one glance than Jodie Whittaker has managed over two seasons.

She's truly amazing I agree that Jodie Comer is amazing, she is the best thing in it hands down, and I have continued watching it despite my reservations. Curious though, did you not see any change in quality from series 1 to 2/3? I did, to me the writing isn't as sharp or clever. Phoebe Waller Bridge did a great job on series 1, and I think the downturn in quality was due to her not been on the writing team from series 2 onwards. In my own opinion anyway.

In my own opinion anyway. well, yeah, s1 is the best one. but also it's new and you have a lot of room to work on. s2 was ok and s3 was very uneven but I liked it anyway (spoilers) my gripe with s3 is the unnecessary ... you know that early plot twist and the ammount of new characters they included, leaving less screen time to invest in Eve's darkest side. But at the same time there's a lot of character development for V and Jodie is amazing in the second half of the season So TheEscapist, before you leave the show completely, at least watch ep 3x05 oh, let's not forget, Jodie is also an Oasis fan

I'm trying to watch Dark, but it's hard to get through series one. I mean, boring. All the characters are so drab, it's like being stuck in an accountant's idea of drama. I feel this way about loads of "great" telly. Watched the first few seasons of Game of Thrones, thought it was dull. Watched the first series of The Sopranos, yawning the whole time. Better Call Saul, bored out of my fucking nut. I was thinking about it during the week - I think I either tend to like things which are completely fucking mad and funny and fast and massive (like S5 of Doctor Who, where the universe is rebooted by a man flying a fairytale prison created from the childhood beliefs of his best friend into a time machine which is exploding across all of reality at once) or something which is just utterly working-class and rough and clear. Like The Royle Family. Or stuff like Limmy's Show or Trigger Happy TV which is just daft and brilliant. I like a laugh, I think. I like things that know not to take themselves seriously.
Anyway - tell you what I have been watching, and it's brilliant. Queer as Folk. British comedy-drama about the gay scene in Manchester in the late 90's. Full of bright, vivid, dynamic characters. It's funny, it's real, it's class. Check out the scene about two minutes into this, where a young lad who's just been fucked by the sexiest guy he's ever met is told to go get some flowers in a hospital. He doesn't even think about it, it's the best night of his life, so he goes into a dying old man's room while he's awake, steals his one vase of flowers from right by his bed, and SPRINTS back to the sexy guy. Fucking brilliant. That's telly.

Watched the first series of The Sopranos Keep going. First season isn’t the best, as it is just a big introduction to the characters. It definitely rewards you later on. Greatest written show of all time imo.

Greatest written show of all time imo. I think I watched the first couple of episodes of S2, but I realised I was watching it because other people said it was good, and I was still bored. I think there's just a kind of self-serious drama that I can't connect with. The likes of Better Call Saul, or Game of Thrones. Mad Men, there's another one. Watched the first series, bored the whole time. I think the characters just don't feel vivid enough for me. If you're gonna do the whole subtle-five-season-character-arc thing, I want to feel that the people involved are these runaway trains that make fireworks between them, that them changing is gonna turn the whole world on it's axis just because their character is such a bold fact of nature - like Walter White. All these mopey fuckers in Dark are boring me. (Having said all that, I will keep watching. Might get better, and I don't judge things before I see a full series.)

All these mopey fuckers in Dark are boring me. (Having said all that, I will keep watching. Might get better, and I don't judge things before I see a full series.) It’s a drama series yeah but I would describe it more like and I hate to say it but a soap, or classic literature. There’s no overarching plot, it’s about characters and how they get through and manage life. It’s full of dark humor, psychology, religion and sometimes heavy violence while also a commentary on all of those things. Sopranos challenges you on an intellectual level no other show did and it’s easy to miss a lot If you don’t focus enough, especially the first time you watch it. It’s nothing like breaking bad, not even close, I could count the moments of suspense on one hand. It’s a show about the absurdity of life if you like and at least for me the greatest achievement in television. Give it time, try to get into the world and just enjoy the dialogues and the acting. Can’t promise that you will „get“ it but it’s definitely worth trying.

Caught up with I May Destroy You on the iPlayer. Fucking brilliant. First couple of episodes were a bit muddled, didn't quite know what the tone was supposed to be, but when it just becomes a working-class drama about sexual assault, there's no stopping it. The characters are all so flawed, and it's such a clear glare at how deeply rape culture is embedded in society, you can't help but be affected by it. Best TV show of the year so far, for me.
