Yesterday i was sending a few folders from my comp to my external hard drive, maybe the 3rd folder as it was sending it said 'windows delayed write failed, windows was unable to save all the data for the file H:\$MFT. the data has been lost .this error may be caused by a failure of your computer or network connection.please try to save this file elsewhere. there was this yellow triangle sign at the bottom of the screen, when i went to click on it,it just went of,so i couldn't save file elsewhere. this is my external hard drive. www.amazon.co.uk/Maxtor-Basics-500GB-Desktop-Drive/dp/B0011EB12Kthis has never happened before,i've done system restore, didn't help. each time i've been connecting usb it says not recognized etc ... so i put in a pen drive 2gb,after disconnecting i tried my external hard drive again then,it came up ok,now the problem is when i hold the mouse over the folders in my external hard drive,it says they're all empty. can anyone please help? i've lost everything, music, family photos etc .... i've always removed safety removal software too, would rebooting my comp help? i'd appreciate any help

I've had this problem with one of my external drives, and it was just a loose USB connection. Check the USB leads at each end, or plug it into a different USB socket. This normally works.

Hey Birchy & thanks,i have tried that but no luck, anyway after posting this last night i left the usb in & restarted comp a few times,it loads up & when i double click i can view all the folders, nothing's missing & when i hold the mouse over any folder, none of them say empty no more, the only problem now is after about 2 mins it disconnects, also every time i've connected my external hard drive it's always said local disc (h:) but it's now f?? any idea? i've been trying to send as much as i can to my comp each time it loads before it cuts off,it'll take forever :-(

What format is your drive in? NTFS or FAT32?

NTFS.im confused to why it's changed from local H: to local F i haven't changed nothing with it,whichever usb socket i plug it in,after a minute it starts loading, autoplay comes up on top left of screen, then after a few mins it just goes off, each time it does load i just quickly click on a folder & send it to my comp,im gonna have to do it this way then keep putting things onto dvd-rs.

can you use disk check on it to fix errors? might be worth giving it a shot. might a few bad sectors on the drive. have you also tried the drive on another computer and see if that makes a difference.

Here's how to run a diskcheck: www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.htmlBut it sounds to me like a connection problem. If the USB connection keeps cutting out then diskcheck probably wouldn't work. I would also suggest trying it with a different PC if you can get hold of one.

ok when my usb is connected from my external hard drive to my computer, after about a minute it disconnects,so i cant even get to do a disk check, though most times when i connect the usb it says something about a malfunction with a usb device,so i guess it's the usb,2 nights ago i bought a compatible usb lead from amazon, hopefully that'll do the trick,i really hope so anyway, and if it does,i'll spend a week putting as much as i can on to dvdr-s for backup.
noelsoasis & birchy, thanks to you both for your time,i hope it works ok when my usb lead comes,if not,the i dont know what to do.
