The meanings in Radiohead songs probably aren't any deeper than those in Oasis songs. I guess it depends on your definition of "deeper." edit: I'd say that the meanings in their songs are more often obscure. I agree mate!! Bang on OK computer, it's deep but what the fuck is he on about!! and why is it clever? I cant fuckin understand the meaning of any of the fuckin words that dwarf uses!!

I wouldn't even try and read into Oasis songs, there's usually not a lot of meaning to the lyrics they're just lines that Noel/Liam like all stuck together! You'll prob find earlier songs have more of a 'story' as such, usually about drink, drugs, sex, and rock n roll! i dont agree with you...the idea obvioulsy comes before the tune. its obvious what the song is about..life littel by little.....also noel likes to say things that seem right to him at the time...and often observes them and takes them back becsaue they can sound synnical or arrogant "you know i didnt mean waht i just said but my god woke up on the wrong side of his bed" hes saying he only said those things becasue hes mad...hes pissed off for somereason...woke up on the wrong side....and he blames that on his "genius" as they used to say only instead using "god"i dont kno if that really makes sence to any of you guys but that what i get out of it. sorry im a bad speller too and dont feel like correcting my writing right now..

How does a 17 year old young lady like yourself get into Oasis nowadays anyway? Not being rude, just curious.

I always found Noel's writing to be very impressionistic, a quick sketch of a feeling or mood. To me that meant that seperating the words and music is impossible at best, pointless at worst.
For me Little by Little is a very adult song and describes that point in time where you have pretty much everything you want but, recognize everything around you has gone to hell. "gave you everything you ever dreamed of as little by little the wheels of your life have slowly fallen off."
The "god" in quesiton is very open ended, it could me Noel's muse, God, some minor god a pagan god or whatever the poor chap might have been holding dear thought he knew the night before.
It's a person questioning everything they thought they knew and wanted, in a holding pattern until they find a new direction...
"why am I really here"
The big ringing guitars and wailing vocal build the emotion and then disappear into some open ended chords leaving one with a sense of being purged and ready to be filled again. Far from being depressing it's a big release left with some contemplative music notes.
Great song to start with there are tons more just like it. The singing and production is spot on, plaintive but, confident, it's not the sound of giving up it's the sound of moving on.

Seriously, you are a very introspective thinker. I like that. I feel the same about Noel's songs, and even about Liam's Born On A Different Cloud. It's quite magical. Also, when he dismisses his songs by saying that they're just about "sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll," he's just being modest and really means the exact opposite. He gives vague answers about the meaning of his songs because he knows that people interpret them in different ways.

(Trying to find a good Little by Little thread! A dad-rock recording of what could've been a monster tune.)

Never cared for it; definition of generic and all oasis tunes with him singing would be at least 50% better with his younger brother on vox (in my opinion).

It was my entry point for Oasis so got that soft spot for it. I was at the age of 11 when pop music was starting to make an impression on me and it was that melodic MOR rock I was into.
It is slap bang middle of the road production and would have been better with 90s Owen Morris with Liam singing, but I always liked Noel's voice back then so its nitpicking. The 90s stuff was too early for me and I had no awareness of their previous stuff, so I was surprised when I picked up Stop The Clocks a few years later to see this wasn't on there. Given the acts who were big around that time like Travis or Stereophonics, it would have been one of the big songs on their greatest hits. So despite it being a massive hit but not anywhere near their peaks, it was the first real marker that made me realise just how great they were.
