I'm reading up a bit on this and it sounds REALLY volatile and potentially horrible. NL4E or any other political minds, can you provide a non-biased summary of what's going on and the potential ramifications?
I'm really just curious if its as scary as it sounds or if it's just a media thing. It sounds like we're on the verge of another collapse unless we dig ourselves even further into the fucking massive economic hole we're already in.

basically you got til august 2nd to sort your ceiling out or you will default on you debts and plunge your economy back to the stone age, i dont know what you can do, raising the debt ceiling just makes things worse, republicans will oppose taxing the rich, basically your staring down the barrel of a gun
and thats not a joke, it will affect the global markets

Thanks for the insight Wax My....errr I mean Bonkers.
It certainly looks like a delicate situation. I don't know much about how all this shit works, but i'm a little surprised the market's not reacting already. It seems with such a lose-lose situation looming, the markets would start to fall a bit with people not wanting to spend money.

I'd rather get your thoughts or an un-biased summary of what's going on with facts, than another link to a right-wing opinion article. I can just as easily paste a link to the article right next to it which gives the exact opposite impression -- www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-gops-dangerous-debt-game/2011/07/14/gIQAB4gyEI_story.htmlI'm not looking for a debate, I'm just curious as to what's going on, but I suppose I didn't miss too many details as I haven't read anything interesting or new on the subject the last couple days. Seems to be another case of a bunch of hard-headed idiots sitting around a table not giving a shit about what they're actually discussing because they're so well paid.

its important as it means the government can borrow, if it doesn't get raised they cant pay any government employees and thats right across the board, they will also default on loans and therefore most probably lose the AAA credit rating, if that happens rates go up not just there but around the globe

Obama urged members of Congress to get behind the proposed legislation, which will raise the country's debt ceiling and cut federal spending.Bipartisan lawmakers finally authorized a deal late Sunday night. The debt ceiling will be increased and the country will keep away from defaulting on its commitments. It was a lengthy and sour fight and there are many problems yet to be solved. Supposedly, neither side is satisfied with the bargain. I found this here: Debt ceiling deal hammered out at 11th hour. The White House hinted that the deadline could be extended for a few days to allow Congress to get legislation through.

"....gotta get Obama outta there!" politics are a fucking joke. fuckers!!!!!!!!! the democrats gave republicans everything they asked for and more while getting nothing in return. still, that's not good enough for the republicans. it's a game to these people. it's not a game, though. this is our country. holding america's economy hostage holds the world's economy hostage. you best believe i'm nearly overwhelmingly voting for incumbents next year.

why didn't the republicans have a problem with burning the money for playing wargames overseas? because it's a black guy who's signing the bills. Obama won 53% of the vote in 2008. He entered office with an approval rating at almost 70%. Gallup now has him down to 41%. He's lost heavily with Independents (not just Republicans - a group that was always going to decline on a liberal president). I hate when Democrats play the race card. It's the most ignorant argument possible. Face it, he's a poor president who has poor leadership skills, can't communicate well even if he can read from the teleprompter without stumbling, has no convictions, is always in campaign mode, put his liberal agenda of health care above jobs, keeps saying the economy is recovering when it's clearly not, and comes off as aloof and out of touch. He's no different than any previous president presiding over a like minded economic and political climate. Jimmy Carter faced the same exact problem. Ronald Reagan was pretty low, too, before the economy turned round. George H. W. Bush lost in 1992 because of the economy. In fact, dare I say Obama is lucky he still hasn't dropped into the upper 30s yet. The old adage goes: Are you better off now than 4 years ago? Well, most Americans are simply not. Racism? Please. The guy is just a poor president. He's the reincarnation of President Carter. He's that bad. Say what you like about George W. Bush, but at least he could lead.

NL4E, you do realize that if a republican is elected to office next term nothing's gonna change and then a democrat will be elected again, and the cycle will continue.
i have absolutely no respect for politics, it's all a popularity contest and sought by people with low self-esteem that wanna be told they're pretty, smart and important.
i should be the fucking president. i don't give a fuck, know i'm great, and know i'm pretty.
fuckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Politics is cyclical. I heard so many people telling me in 2008 that the GOP was dead and the Democrats would rule for a generation. I told them this was nonsense, and that politics is indeed cyclical. At the time, because of the then GOP brand and Obama's promise, it did look like the Dems could do what the GOP did the previous decade. Now that doesn't look likely. Barring a miracle, the Democrats will lose the WH next year, and quite possibly the Senate, too. I was also told (and read) that 2008 was a re-aligning election with the likes of VA, NC, possibly even some southern states all going democratic in the future. I responded by saying this was nonsense and a one-off as a vote against Bush. Once again, I've been proven right. Hell, Obama is polling behind in the likes of PA, even! Re-alignment in favor of the Dems? Nope. Perhaps just the opposite. And the whole elitist mantra of "the republicans are playing a game" is utter biased nonsense. Of course they are playing a game. But so are the other side. Stop being blinded. It shouldn't be a game, but it's the way the system has worked, and it's nothing new, so get over yourselves. The first thing we learn in political science is that the number one goal of a politician is to get re-elected. Note that there's no caveat there designating a party. Oh, and LIB, if the GOP adds the Presidency AND the Senate to the already conquered House, something will change. That something is Obamacare, with it being repealed. That's pretty significant..... PS, I love how Democrats talked about the right wing being the party of extremism and violent rhetoric in February, wanting more civility, but because they didn't get their own way this week they call the Tea Party (you know, the members who were voted by the public to do what they actually said they would do) terrorists. Yeah, score another point to the hypocritical left.

Yeah, score another point to the hypocritical left. for the record......... i hold no political views. politics really are a way for adults to continue to act like a children. i'm all about compromise and meeting in the middle, even though i'm very extreme myself, i'm probably what is labeled 'bi-polar', i have no middle ground but when thinking in terms outside myself, for instance in terms of politics or whatever you wanna call it, there should just be a middle, it's called compromise, what real adults do. i don't know if that has a definition, maybe socialism? i don't know. politics are just whiny children masquerading as adults. ok, i voted once. in the 2004 presidential elections i voted for John Kerry after watching the presidential debates and decided i can't let an idiot, that acts like 8 year old kid, and has no class run my country........but he won, anyway. at that point i lost a lot of faith in humanity and hope for the human race., and i gave up on politics. God bless.
