I've just finished uni for the summer and I've got time to spare. I'm currently reading an ultimate classic, Thomas Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd. Anyone got any recommended reads?

The Godfather by Mario Puzo.
And I second the Count of Monte Cristo recommendation of spaneli.

i would also definitely check out "shogun" by james clavell, "high fidelity" by nick hornby, dante's "inferno" and "the sun also rises" by ernest hemingway. or Paradise Lost by John Milton one of the most boring and tedious books i ever had to read. (sorry. ) The Godfather by Mario Puzo. YES. +k

I've got Long Way Down and Fever Pitch by Hornby, is High Fidelity better? I enjoyed those first two.

^^Nick Hornby is one of my favourite writers. I've read all his books except Juliet Naked, which is the newest I think. All are great!
Fever Pitch is all about soccer/football obsession, I thinkthere really should be an Oasis one.

Anything by Cormac McCarthy too.
Sun Tzu's The Art of War is also one of my favs. Short, simple, yet an interesting read.
And anything by Steinbeck (my favorite all-time author)

And anything by Steinbeck (my favorite all-time author) Aye, you've hit the nail right on the head there - every book of his is absolutely brilliant.

Anything by G Garcia Marquez as he's my favorite author. "One Hundred Years Of Solitude" is the most brilliant book I had the pleasure of reading.
Currently, I'm reading "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" to see what's all the fuss about. Interesting so far

All that I've read from Steinbeck was The Winter of Our Discontent, and it was very generic and uninspired. I'll read some other stuff of his when I get the time. Maybe I'm missing alot
