Frightened Rabbit - The Winter of Mixed Drinks One of my best albums this year. "The Midnight Organ Fight" was brilliant too, it was my best album of 2008. I've seen them in April and gonna see them tomorrow again. Scott Hutchinson is a genius. You should listen to "Poke" acoustic, matt. Very beautiful.

How do you discover bands like Frightened Rabbit and Twilight Sad from where you are? Most people in Scotland haven't heard of them at all. Of course, I had barely heard of The Twilight Sad until you recommended them (by which point I now have their records!).

Someone from Scotland recommended me The Twilight Sad back in late 2007. As soon as I heard "Cold Days In A Birdhouse", they really got me. I discovered Frightened Rabbit when they played at SXSW in March 2008. Many Scottish bands like The Law, Make Model, Camera Obscure etc. played at the festival. FR were one of them, I heard their "Modern Leper" acoustic on Vic Galloway show and I really loved it. I think I'm one of a few people in Holland who's been listening to them since their early days. They're both really fantastic. Sadly FR had to cancel tonight's gig in Amsterdam as the singer Scott lost his voice. I really hope he gets well very soon. Have you heard Sparrow and The Workshop, matt? They're brilliant too. An another treasure from your country.

Yes, I have heard of Sparrow and The Workshop - my mate recommended them, and true enough they are brilliant. Crystal Fall is great - a real highlight from this year.

Listening to Jewellery Quarter by The Twang in full right now. Still have no idea why this album got panned, literally, by critics. It's so melodic.

Goo Goo Dolls - Superstar Carwash
GGD from 1989 to 1996 were amazing. From 1998's Dizzy Up The Girl (the one with Slide, Iris, black Balloon), to 2001's Gutterflower they were good but too ballad driven, less ballsy rocknroll. The last few since have just been really disappointing...sometimes bordering on "adult contemporary". If that's the direction they want to follow, thats fine, its just really sad becuase this band used to absolutely ROCK, and there is no further proof of that than their 1993 album Superstar Carwash.
