Deep into Oscar Wilde 174 line poem 'The Sphinx' is the inspiration for a familiar lyric... I wonder what others can be found that we don't already know about... The Importance of Being a Plagiarist! (It would be a tasteful poetic reference if Leonard Cohen did it).

'Song In a Suitcase' from Noel's 1993 notebook contains the same middle 8 as 'Callin' All' from Noel's 1994 notebook.

Ok some genuinely new stuff thanks to oasisdna (Brian Garcia) sharing them on Instagram. I'd love to know the sources of them. The original lyrics to '(It's Good) To Be Free'. In Noel's 1993 notebook there's a song called 'Live By the Sea' that I've always suspected is this song. This adds a lot weight to that being true. It also suggest a 1993 origin to this piece of paper: The original lyrics to 'Underneath the Sky'. I've tried and failed to read the imprinted writing on it: Lyrics to 'Going Nowhere'. From the same notebook as '(It's Good) To Be Free'. The only real difference is instead of saying "growing older in the rain" it says getting "getting lonely in the rain" the same as in the demo. By 1994 Noel had changed the lyrics to the one we know now (as can be seen in Noel's 1994 notebook) which suggest to me this definitely older: Lyrics to 'Headshrinker'. From the same notebook as '(It's Good) To Be Free' and 'Going Nowhere': I'm strongly proposing a 1993 origin date for sheets containing '(It's Good) To Be Free', 'Going Nowhere' and 'Headshrinker'. In line with what Noel has previously said about 'Underneath the Sky' and because of its exclusion from Noel's 1993 and 1994 notebooks I'm strongly proposing a 1995 origin date for the sheet containing 'Underneath the Sky'. On a completely separate note did anyone save the photographs of the lyric sheets from Mr Monobrows old website (they're not viewable on the Wayback Machine). I've saved the vast majority of them but there's a few I'm missing. Any help would be massively appreciated.

I've tried and failed to read the imprinted writing on it: Update: I can now read the imprinted writing well enough to understand what it is exactly. It's an earlier draft of the song. Some of the more illegible imprints I've highlighted are clearly not 100% accurate but there's enough information here to show what it was that was written on top of this page. The only way we'd get a better insight to what the earlier draft is is if the physical copy shows up or oasisdna can provide a high resolution image of the back of the paper with some strong side lighting. Then with a bit of squinting hopefully it would reveal itself. Also, on an unrelated note, the lyric sheet to 'Rockin' Chair' that came with Noel's 1993 notebook (which sold at Christie's in 1998 and has an unreleased verse in it) revealed itself again last month. With all the research I've shared on this subject I decided I've earned the right to treat myself and I actually purchase the damn thing and it arrived a few days back! Here is a scan of it in by far highest resolution it's ever been shared in. Unfortunately there's no additional writing on the back or imprinted writing to be seen on it but if I was to find anything obviously I'd share it with you all. Here it is:

Using the same technique I used for Noel's 1994 notebook, I have successfully ordered the pages we have for Noel's Red Silvine Notebook from 1993 (bar 1). I'm able to do this by precisely aligning each page up, then looking for distinct folds and marks, as well as imprinted writing and text showing through from behind the paper. Of course having many of the pages numbered has helped too! Noel's Red Silvine Notebook (1993)
- Front Cover / Inside Front Cover - 'Only My Pride' ② - 'Take Me Away' ③ - 'Lost Again' ④ - 'Blue' ⑥ - 'Is That A Fact?' ⑦ - 'I Am Always Right!!' ⑩ - 'A Shelter From The Fall' ⑪ - 'Song In A Suitcase' ⑫ - 'Razorbarb' ⑬ - 'Half The World Away' ⑭ - 'Whatever' ⑮ - “Body feels asleep…"- 'Hello!' - 'Shaker Maker' - 'Tracksuit Bottoms'* / 'The Mirror & The Razorblade' - 'When I’m Around' - Inside Back Cover *Upside-down
The only page I was unable to accurately order was the lyric sheet containing the line "I would live in hell...". The copy I have of this sheet of paper is terrible and the words are completely illegible. There is some faint imprinted writing on the 'Hello!' page that has a similar form to the paragraphs of "I would live in hell..." but it's nowhere near clear enough to say for certain. All I can be sure of is that "I would live in hell..." is located somewhere between 'I Am Always Right!!' and 'When I'm Around'. As you can see we have various pages missing. The lyric sheets to 'All Around The World' and 'Definitely Maybe' (namechecked by Christie's in 1998) might be 2 of the missing sheets but as I haven't seen a copy of them I cannot say whether they were originally part of the notebook or the additional loose sheets that were sold with it.

It also suggest a 1993 origin to this piece of paper: Ok some more evidence it was called 'Live By The Sea'. Maybe the ambiguous pronunciation of 'live' is what made Noel change the title? [NME - 12 Nov 1994] Oh Liam.

Pretty sure it was mentioned as 'Live By The Sea' in a Select article. It was referred to as an old track from the Boardwalk. I'd have to dig out the article (Liam on the magazine cover with a purple-ish background, autumn 94 time?).

I remember that Liam used to really hate the song when Oasis were together and used to call it shit and I guess that he still does. Personally I've always loved the song and think it's one of Oasis's best b.sides from that era.

Ok some genuinely new stuff thanks to oasisdna (Brian Garcia) sharing them on Instagram. I'd love to know the sources of them. Something I forgot to tie to this is another early lyric sheet we have for '(It's Good) To Be Free'... You can see how it has evolved since the first draft into something closer to its final form, which I'll include below. As you can clearly see in the photo Noel has used a piece of paper from the hotel they were staying at in Tokyo in mid Sep 1994 to write this new draft. The band recorded it in Texas less than a month later. (It's Good) To Be Free
Head like a rock spinning round and round I found it in a hole sitting upside down You point the finger at me but I don't believe Paint me a wish on a velvet sky You demand the answers but don't know why in my mind (in my mind) There is no time The little things they make me so happy All I wanna do is live by the sea Yeah, little things they make me so happy But it's good, yes it's good, it's good to be free So what would you say if I said to you It's not in what you say it's in what you do You point the finger at me but I don't believe Bring it on home to where we found Head is like a rock sitting upside down In my mind (in my mind) there is no time The little things they make me so happy All I wanna do is live by the sea The little things they make me so happy But it's good, yes it's good, it's good to be free Yeah it's good, yes it's good, it's good to be free

Think you hear noel say "alright tony" just before the drums start on 'listen up' Tony continues to count in Cigs & Alc on the hihat but he gets faded out, or fades himself out, as the riff plays. Also his little fills at the dead last second of Bring it on Down

'Those Swollen Hands Blues' relies heavily on the instrument Optigan, specifically the 'romantic strings' sample disc, probably tuned down alot. Almost the same samples can be heard all over Sparklehorse track "Babies On The Sun"

Almost the same samples can be heard all over Sparklehorse track "Babies On The Sun" Is it not a mellotron or a moog synth? I always thought Those Swollen Hands Blues sounded like the Bee Gees Perhaps those instruments are also mixed in there somewhere, but the main flow of the song really comes from optigan. couldnt find a proper sample, but you can hear those bits on the following youtube demonstration vid. the optigan has 5 long switches of some short note/intro, then there are the round buttons for chords which are usually a main melody, and the keyboard - which i dont think was used on TSHB. the way the optigan is used on TSHB is - First its probably tuned down so the F chord is actually C and C is actually G, also its probably sampled in order to stretch times because this disc is on waltz time whereas TSHB is on 4/4. So, from the beginning of the song the 2nd long switch is held down, giving that repeating guitar strum + bell sound. Then around 1:00 the beat kicks in and from there on its mainly switching between the C and F buttons giving that string melody, finally ending around 2:44 with the F button held down together with the 3rd long switch. on to the video: 2nd long switch heard on 0:07 3nd long switch heard on 0:09, F chord heard on 0:23, C chord heard on 0:25

Ok some genuinely new stuff... Update: I can now [...] Also, on an unrelated note, the lyric sheet to 'Rockin' Chair' that came with Noel's 1993 notebook (which sold at Christie's in 1998 and has an unreleased verse in it) revealed itself again last month. Here it is: For the last 6 months or so I've been searching for the catalogue that was produced for Christie's 'Pop, Film and Entertainment' memorabilia sale on Thursday 10th December 1998. This was the sale in which Noel's 1993 notebook (with additional loose sheets) was sold (including the above lyric sheet I was fortunate enough to purchase late last year). Now I already had an alright scan of the relevant page in this catalogue but I wanted the real thing not only as a great add on to the lyric sheet but also so I could scan the page myself in super high definition. The reason I wanted to do this is two fold. First and foremost I wanted to overlay the above lyric sheet with the 1998 photograph to further prove that the lyric sheets are one and the same but also because I noticed a detail in the photo which had gone undiscussed before (hello this thread again). In the original scan I could see in the photo Noel's tracklist for the band's second album (dated mid Sep - mid Dec) presented with all the other lyric sheets around the notebook. We have a good close up of this tracklist thanks to the December 1998 addition of Record Collector (yeah I've purchased that too) which I'll display below... Now what we don't see from this closeup is the rest of the page which this tracklist was taken from. If you look very closely at photo in the auction catalogue however you can see more of this page which includes a 3 song list written above it. Presumably these are the singles from this '2nd Album'. Unfortunately the original scan was insufficient in resolution to read these song titles but from the lengths of the words and because we know what was eventually released by the band I made the educated guess that the singles were listed as the following: 1. 'Hello' / 2. 'She's Electric' / 3. 'All Around the World'. I didn't make a post on this 6 months ago because I knew that I could probably figure it out for certain when I eventually got hold of the catalogue which I finally did a few days ago. So here's the scan of the relevant part of the photo. The photo is in black and white, the relevant part is about 23mm x 14mm across and is a little over exposed. With all that said we are fortunate enough to still just about read it. For those who are struggling it's: 1. 'Hello' / 2. 'New Stones' / 3. 'All Around the World'. So it turns out I got 2 out of 3 right but what's interesting is what I got wrong and that Noel deemed this mystery song 'New Stones' to be strong enough to be a single. This is over 'She's Electric', 'Rockin' Chair', 'Going Nowhere' (listed in the tracklist as 'Here Am I') and so on... So what is this mystery song? Ultimately we don't know and likely never will. Previously I had speculated that it might be a precursor to 'Some Might Say' as Noel has compared the song to The Rolling Stones before and the song has a very Definitely Maybe sound to it. These days though I'm more inclined to say it might be a precursor to 'Don't Look Back in Anger'. I discussed this on the previous page last year ( SHORTCUT) but to summarise... 1. Noel wrote a list of songs (dated mid Sep - mid Dec) that weren't in contention for the band's debut or being earmarked as b-sides to singles. The 3rd song listed (it was originally the first until he crossed it out) was 'New Stones/Beret'. ( SEE IMAGE HERE) 2. In Noel's 1994 notebook there's a list of songs (loosely dated to mid 1994). Despite being listed as single worthy less than a year earlier 'New Stones/Beret' isn't even listed however a song under the title 'Raspberry Beret' is. Maybe there's no connection but Beret would be a very unusual word to repeat so I'm going to assume they might be the same song. ( SEE IMAGE HERE) 3. Now calling a song 'Raspberry Beret' is weird not just cuz it's a weird title in itself (and very un-Oasis like) but because there's a very famous Prince song with that same title. Now in the past I've speculated that Noel might use placeholder names for work in progress songs that are heavily inspired (ahem) by other songs (see 'Everything's Alright' listed in the tracklist above. I've suggested it might be the precursor to 'Step Out' due to the obvious melodic lift from Stevie Wonder's 'Uptight (Everything's Alright)'). Now last year LlAM pointed out ( HERE) that the chorus to 'Don't Look Back In Anger' lifts the melody to Prince's 'Raspberry Beret'. So maybe, just maybe, this song (and ultimately 'New Stones') is some kind of precursor song to what Noel eventually wrote in Paris in April 1995. EDIT: A point I should add. One plausible reason to explain why we've never heard about a longer gestation period for 'DLBIA' from Noel (assuming it's true of course) is that perhaps he's simply being cautious and doesn't want to bring attention to something which could be regarded as plagiarism. It's not one of his more obvious lifts and keeping it that way is probably in his best interest.
