Finally watched the movie in preparation for the show. What a useless movie. i hated it. It's not what people expected but it's a film that certainly improves and impresses with repeated viewings. Many of the themes and story threads are not as disconnected with each other as at first seems apparent. I can certainly see why many Americans with strong religious views were offended by it. But that's just a bonus. Beautifully shot, directed and acted. A movie to be admired - even if it's not easy to watch at times. As a blockbuster film aimed at restoring the franchise, it fails dismally. As a slightly arthouse, character driver horror piece, it's quite brilliant in a quiet, understated way.

so, did anybody watch the new episodes yet?
I thought the first one was very sloppy, recycling ideas and had a bit of continuity issues. Maybe the fact that I watched every one of the previous episodes recently made me aware of certain things.
The second one was fantastic! and so gross

First one is kind of 'just there' for me looking back after a few days. I didn't know what to think of a 9/11 truther joining the list of kooks Mulder has taken counsel from, other than it was funny.
Second episode was definitely more on the ball. I just hope the William story is done justice to bring it up again. I was in tears during that old episode when Scully explained to Reyes why she was giving him up.
Hard to watch Duchovny now without thinking of Californication just a little bit and waiting for him to say something perverted.

Just saw MY STRUGGLE 1 and whilst I didn't find it the train wreck some are painting out, it was a bit of a mess.
I accept that several years have past since we last saw Mulder and he may have changed - but it's hard to identify with and understand his bizarre behaviour in this episode without knowing how and why he's changed. Instead the show hits the ground running as if it's afraid to alienate a young audience. It almost feels like a complete reboot at times. His strangely antagonistic relationship with Skinner was equally perplexing.
Like most X-Files episodes, the use of almost wall-to-wall incidental music was typically annoying but gave the new series a flavour that immediately felt traditional, even if the faster pace was an unwelcome change (and yes, I've been watching the older episodes again recently and they were indeed much slower).
What the episode needed was another 15 or 30 minutes of time to not only slow the pace down a bit but bring us up to date with the characters before throwing them in the deep end.
It was also a shame to see the episode end with the expected re-opening of the X-Files (ho hum). It was Carter's refusal to move away from this central premise that hampered the original series in it's later seasons, along with his gradual inability to let the audience connect with the main characters.
FOUNDER'S MUTATION was much better - a traditional early season X-Files that had just enough character stuff in it to actually make it moving in places.
But even that episode was strangely lacking in some ways. Why exactly were the X-Files re-opened? Is Mulder operating out of the same original office? Did he find the actual files? What did it feel like for him signing back on again the first day? Did he have to pass an FBI physical and if so how much has he aged and is it a worry for him? Where is he living now? How do the current FBI operatives feel about him coming back? How did Scully feel about having to work with him again?
All these questions - most of them character driven - were completely ignored.
It's good to see Mulder and Scully back and I'll keep watching - but I hope somebody in charge gradually takes their foot off the accelerator.

this last episode was fantastic, so ridiculous and silly. And I loved the ammount of inside jokes and references to previous episodes!

Duchovny was a bit flat in the first two episodes but he's obviously enjoying himself in this third new episode. After all those years of playing the wonderful Hank Moody in CALIFORNICATION perhaps he just feels he's back on more recently familiar comic territory.
If - like me - you had a bit of a crush of Scully as you were growing up you might find it odd to see one of your fantasies suddenly coming to life on the screen in a wonderful moment that is so unexpected you can hardly believe what you're watching.
As a stand alone episode, MULDER AND SCULLY MEET THE WERE MONSTER is so perfectly pitched that it's hard to fault. It's been a long time since the show was this much fun.
As part of a run of a new series, however, it seems oddly placed - tossed early into the line up merely to show off the various styles the series is capable of. Unfortunately this episode takes the slot of some (at this early stage) desperately needed character development. I'm still finding it hard to connect with Mulder and Scully and the current lack of depth to them is holding the show back.
If you're watching this is as a marathon with the old series, you'll find Mulder and Scully sleeping together in I WANT TO BELIEVE, and staying in separate hotel rooms three episodes later. Quite why this change has happened has yet to be explained. More importantly, how either Mulder or Scully feel about this - and each other - has been completely ignored. If they don't care about their relationship - even if it's just a friendship now - how is the audience supposed to?

my God how bad was that finale?! Jesus, Chris Carter managed to ruin one of my favourite things of my youth ffs I only enjoyed 2 or 3 episodes on this run I'm gonna pretend this show ended in season 8 or 9, even with Duchovny not being in every episode it still was watchable

I'm worried about your reaction to the finale! At first i didn't realize the thread was 10 years old and in your first post you mention that David Duchovny is hot and i was like...hmmmm not so much anymore
