i realy dont know, it cracks me up sometimes. if yes: what is behind this end-thingy or border? nothing? cant be imo, cuz everything is something, and then there must be an end to that whats behind the end etc etc. if no: how can you possibly imagine a thing with no end. everything we know has an end (even a ring, for the smartasses). it could be me, but i cant imagine anything like that. only reasonable theory for me is that the universe is a big explosion, that expands faster than light, so we can simply never reach the end. but still. that explosion must be in some kind of space too. WWHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

There is a border in my mind, and this question and it's answer go over it. No clue whatsoever (not that I'd give it much thought anyway).

i remember reading an article by some scientist a few years back about this (can't remember who wrote the article)
He descirbed imagining there actually being an edge to the universe as incorrect. The concept is difficult, but he goes on to expand....
say you left earth and you said "right, i'm going to the edge of the universe" and you travelled in a straight line away from earth waiting to hit the edge... what would happen is you would not find the edge, but oddly, if you travelled long enough, you'd end up exactly where you started
This concept is easier to imagine when we relate it down a dimension and consider the earth.... hundreds of years ago, people imagined there being an "edge of the earth" - they would have conceived that if you walked long enough you would reach the edge... what happens of course is, if you walk long enough away from a point, you end up back there (by means of having walked around the world)
Translating this thought to trying to understand the shape & condition of the universe is a lot more difficult, as extra dimensions have to be considered.
I don't fully "get" it, altho the scientist dude did seem to, but the gist of the concept is an interesting thought exercise nonetheless

good theory. but the fucked up thing is that its only a theory and will probably be a theory forever...

There is no end to the universe. Different solar systems will form and when the sun blows up in 5 billion years we would have moved to a new place like earth. We can't even imagine an end to the universe. It gives you a headache thinking about it.

We can't even imagine an end to the universe. It gives you a headache thinking about it. ;D ;D He didn't mean it that way...he asks if there's an end to the universe not if there will be an end to the universe...He's wondering if the universe is a limited ''space''.... Today's technology can't answer that question. All theories say that the universe is endless, hard to imagine or conceive but I think that's the way it is. And btw, expansion of the universe means that distance between stars and galaxies are getting bigger not that the universe itself is growing...

It's mad when you have drunken conversations about this stuff It's meant to always be expanding, so there can't be an end, but there must be a limit to it i think. What gets me is though, is if the big bang theory is true, (which i'd go along with like), then what was the thing that blew up to start the universe? And like it was said above, that thing causing the big bang must have been inside something, therefore there must be a limit. I know this probably makes no sense ;D

;D Basically, what i mean is, what was was the thing that 'banged' in the 'big bang' theory for the universe? I think that it must have been something, inside of something else, and because it is inside something else, there must be a limit. But then this other thing that it inside of might be limitless. Probably cause more confusion with this one ;D but i dont know how else to say it. It's madness

WWHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I vaguely remember asking the same thing on this forum ages ago and i'm pretty sure it was you who said that you shouldn't think about these kinds of things because it screws with your head. I guess i must have seeped into your subconcious oh and yes there is an end.

I wish i'd seen this sooner. I'm gonna have to come clean now. I'm doing a degree in AstroPhysics, so we get to think about all this shit. It's great!
The Universe will be round, like everythin else that have formed out there so keep going and you'll get back. but I like to think that like getin out of earth atmosphere you'll be able to get out of the Universe so to speak.
Scientists have no idea what was before the big bang or right at the beggining of it for that matter. All lknown laws break down. And my lecturer actually said its as fair as any other theory to think that there is some sort of big man upstairs, because science just couldn't give an answer.
And yes, drunken conversations like this are top. I had one yesterday, it was great!
