IS this the closest that British fans will get to seeing Oasis in 2003?
Despite taking most of this year off to recover from the Heathen Chemistry world tour, Noel Gallagher and bandmate Gem Archer grabbed their guitars for an impromptu set at The Bandits Bandwagon club night in Liverpool.
The duo played 'Stop The Clocks', a new song which Noel has previously claimed to be 'the best I've ever written' alongside Oasis classics 'Talk Tonight, 'Wonderwall', 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Married With Children'.
NME's spy described 'Stop The Clocks', written at the end of the Heathen Chemistry sessions, as a cross between 'The Hindu Times' and 'Wonderwall', similar to late George Harrison-penned Beatles.
It features the lyric 'Stop the clocks and leave it all behind/On the backseat of my mind'.
'This is the smallest gig I've ever played, by a mile' Noel enthused to NME backstage. 'We toured with The Bandits last year and they kept saying, 'come up and play.' I came up to watch City and they asked me to do it. 'Cos I borrowed most of my guitars to The Bandits while they're making their album, all my stuffs up here anyway - so I was like, 'Why not?'
Despite industry rumours of at least one show in 2003, a spokesperson for the band told NME that Oasis had no gigs planned this year, raising the possibility that Noel's set will be the only time he plays live in the UK until at least 2004. However, the band are keeping busy - especially Liam and Gem.
Noel added 'Liam's written loads of new tunes and, as much as it pains me to say it, they're amazing! I'm writing these six-minute long 'Champagne Supernova' things and Liam's writing all these three minute pop songs. He's got the blues, man. His new songs sound like The Yardbirds. He's been going into the studio loads with Gem. Gem's a really good sounding board'.
In addition to 'Stop The Clocks', rumours suggest new Oasis songs have working titles including 'They aint got nothing on me, they ain't got nothing on you', 'Longer', 'Singin' Your Life', 'You wanna Feel My Shame', 'Say It', 'Revolution Man' and 'The Good Rebel'.
