Once is fine.
To quote matt earlier, the veneer shines brightly when it's listened to frequently. Its a good song but it suffers from its cliché tone, and its predictable & polished nature.
DITW is basically the reason we are all here. It's the sort of song Noel could muster up at will back in the '90s during his songwriting peak. Pure vulnerable and sincere emotion. It's a complete and raw display of his talent.

These two songs plus Sail On are the only things from Noel and Liam that have really mattered to me in the last few years. A few other great tunes, of course, but these three are at the summit.

I like both songs. * Runs and hides. Jesus Christ. This place is really slipping.

Dead In The Water. Not even close. More raw, more sincere, less drippy and sentimental than Once - just overall more authentic. Classic Noel - it’s the one genuine ‘traditional’ classic of his from the last ten years when applying the old formula. Not sure what the hysteria about Once is all about. Industry songwriters work for the more fun, more upbeat and rocky tunes which is ideal for Liam but when it comes to sincerity this is where the plastic veneer shines brightly. I think songs that have an openness to it like Bold work better when it’s coming purely from Liam. Once is as cliched as it gets. A lot of people thinking a song is really good with a small minority describing it as a classic does not qualify as hysteria. It usually means someone just doesn't get or agree with the opinions of others. Everything you've described in my opinion applies to FWIW and not to Once.

True, lyrics aren't his strongest at the moment. But quite honestly, I think I'm one of the few people here who is happy he's experimenting with his songwriting. Since Oasis broke up 10 years ago I've expanded my music taste, so it's refreshing to see Noel do the same and I'm genuinely excited to see where he's going. Even if none of it is as remotely good as DITW, I'm glad to hear him try new things. As much as I love Liam and appreciate what he's done, I just can't get that excited for his new material. I know what I'm going to get, and that's great for some people but it doesn't interest me at all. I think what puts me off more, is wherever you on social media to see content involving Noel, you'll find Liam diehards shitting on anything he's doing or anything he's saying. By all means, Noel is no saint, but the Liam followers play up to the Parkamonkey name Noel gave them pretty well.

It was a good crack there. Lyrics were never Noel’s strongest suit to be honest, capable of brilliance at times though.

I'm just hoping Liam isn't going down the Ashcroft route of a solo career.
