Beady eye ”failed” due to several reasons:
1. Liam was broadly viewed as a ”has been” and had turned into some type of parody of himself in both interviews and videos. His haircuts and clothes were often ugly as well. There was nothing engaging about him.
2. Most songs of Beady eye had no chorus. As much as I like e.g. Flick of the finger and Start Anew and so on, it is just the same verse over and over. Fortunately, I think that the verses of Start anew are really good. But most people demand more of a good song than only good verses repeating themselves over and over again.
3. The best songs of Beady eye were not as good as the best solo stuff from Liam. Even the 1:20 minute clip of Once is clearly much better and touching, and much more broadly liked and discussed (also outside this forum), compared to e.g. Off at the next exit.
4. The best songs of Beady eye were mostly not released as singles.
5. The production was not modern enough. Wall of glass sounds both better (in my opinion) and more modern than most Beady eye ”rockers”, to a large extent due to the production, background singers etc.
6. Liam’s studio vocals during Beady eye were often some of the worst we have heard. The verses of Soon come tomorrow are simply embarrassing. It sounds like he really tries to hit the correct notes throughout most of the verses.
7. The marketing as well as the entire image of Beady eye was cringeworthy. The videos were dull or disappointing. Interviews were boring and embarrassing. Andy Bell and Gem Archer might be good musicians, but they have zero charisma. In fact, Liam had zero charisma at the time. In the eyes of most people, Liam was viewed as a quite depressing character. During the release of As you were, the marketing team managed to make him cool again.
I have probably forgot a lot of stuff. But these are some things I can think of.

6. Liam’s studio vocals during Beady eye were often some of the worst we have heard. The verses of Soon come tomorrow is simply embarrasing. It sounds like he tries to hit the correct notes throughout most of the verses. problem with BE was Liam's attempt to "show people he could still sing" as that was generally the biggest thing that people got on his back about after multiple tours of poor vocals, I believe he mentioned this a few times with interviewers mentioning the more "honest" vocals........problem was that his vocals generally wernt that good at the time and they were left pretty exposed on the record. There was little to no effects on his voice for the most part.
as you were demonstrates more varied vocals in the right way imo, for example the higher notes in paper crown and universal gleam, granted Liam can't sing these parts live but it doesnt matter.
overall, as a fan of tom delonge, he much of the same in that he can make use of smoke and mirrors within the studio to produce a decent, clean vocal but live its a totally different ball game. Saying that, I would much rather he use the smoke and mirrors to make his record vocals decent because thats what im going to be listening to. Ian browns records would be fucking dreadful if he used his live voice, the guy cant sing at all.
Liams vocals on BE has always been my biggest criticism of the record, I simply don't like how thin and tired he sounds on most of the tracks. The deluxe tracks sounds like they were recorded at a different time tbh, his voice is generally much stronger on those few tracks (evil eye, off at the next exit, back after the break)

Think Beady Eye 2nd album altho flawed isn’t as bad the sales/reaction suggest. It’s better than AYW.

Not really, to me AYW we’re so bland, haven’t listened to it since the month it was released, other than Wall of Glass I don’t find anything memorable. Didn’t mind Beady Eye 2nd album, sure there are some crap songs but the production is lively & a few songs worth a repeat.
