I can see what people are suggesting I suppose, although it wasn't my first impression of the meaning of the video. My first thought of the protest scenes was of France this year. Yellow vest riots. I wouldn't have connected it to American civil rights but then I guess that comes down to the personal history of the viewer. I wouldn't have said the video was any more corporate or aping American culture than say the D'ya know what I mean video.

I mean, I've watched it. It's just a video. I don't really care either way.
I've just got in from work though and my Dad asked if I'd seen it. Then just said it was the most pointless video he'd ever seen (for the record, he doesn't like BSD and isn't really big into either Liam or Noel - though does listen occasionally).
But yeh. Meh. The song's decent, that's all that counts. The vid doesn't do anything for it either way imo.

We are talking about British acts and Bernard Manning is widely known here. Is his racism irrelavant because he isn't 'widely known' in America? Or because its Noel's video? Personally I don't think many people are going draw the same conclusion you have. I'm not making this a Noel vs Liam thing, you are btw. I can't comment on that aspect of Noel's video because being American I lack the cultural information and context to make a decision on whether or not including Manning is an approval of his racism. Maybe someone who is more informed than me can give their opinion It's definitely not an approval of racism. It's just clips from a show from the 70s.

Fuck’s sake it’s just a generic depiction of general social unrest and political upheaval/descent into chaos.
Ok, they haven’t done it particularly brilliantly but people are reading things into this that simply aren’t there.
Noel’s decision to bring Bernard Manning back from the dead was far more controversial and no one seems to be bothered about that.

But it's not generic...it's got a distinct southern american look to it. I'm really not up in arms about it. I'm not southern, nor african-american, obviously wasn't apart of the civil rights or war protests but I know bad taste when I see it...And other people have already mentioned other aspects of appropriation about the video. It's just a weird miss-mash. I don't know. Just gives me an ick feeling. Liam is better than this.

I don’t see it as appropriating the civil rights movement protests. If I were to connect it to something I would say it looks more like the anti-Vietnam war protests in like San Francisco. Especially with the signs with flowers and peace signs; maybe that’s not much better, but I certainly didn’t connect it to the civil rights movement. Liam also isn’t walking in between the police and the civilians in attempt to calm the scenario and act as some saviour, unlike Kendall Jenner with the Pepsi commercial.

The song is kinda a protest song about being wronged and breaking free and following your on path etc. Maybe not a particularly brilliant example it's type but nevertheless the video is just a visual representation of the ideas in the song. If it deserves to be criticised for anything, it should be criticised for being shite.

Am I the only one here who LOVES this vid as much as the song? It's better than all of this Noel bullshit vids from 2011 era and definitely better than most of BE vids. I love it as well! All I want from a music video is cool visuals and this one has it all.

To be clear I never said Liam was guilty of culture appropriation. I said he should beware of letting his management run amok with his videos using imagery that have nothing to do with him, his beliefs, or his song. And you have to be thoughtful with politically charged imagery right now because of the state of the world. Its not just "oh cool, a riot". Then (1960s) as now, people are actually rioting and protesting, irl, and paying the consequences for it, not doing it to sell a product. Anyway, moving on.. and looking forward to the next song and a better video!

Wow, Nicki just announced a new single, obviously she's basing her release dates around her L4E relevancy. I actually thought her last album was over-hated a bit, Chun-Li was a bop single, so I'm interested to see how she comes back from that. And, yeah, this video isn't doing for me. Liam in just a burning house would have been cool. Keep it simple. It's not fookin' Star Wars, after all. Who is Nicki?

Mediocre and forgettable. With the look and personality of Liam to work with, they could’ve broken the net; creatively disappointing.

Like what do the people in the first half have to do with the second half?? It boggles the mind. I have to stop thinking about it, driving me crazy. Like trying to solve a really stupid puzzle hahaha

I think some people are reading way too much into this. it's just a promo video, there are worse things out there for sure. and there are protests all over the world for many different things, hardly a cultural appropiation imo

They kinda did. Perfectly entitled to their view of course. "And as another user mentioned, it is appropriation. Looks like a Gap commercial, with all the forethought behind that as well."
