I have all my CD's, singles and LP's in my Ikea shelf (4 cubes) in my living room. The top shelf is for Oasis CD's, second one is for The Smith, Weller and other bands and the third one is for LP's. I store all my CD's and LP's per bands/artiest, not in alphabetical order.
I store all my bootlegs in discs and in external hard drive. I have my bootleg list in excel sheet, otherwise I wouldn't know what I have!
I also have an another shelf with Oasis books and framed autograph of Noel and Liam in my study. My record player is on my Oasis shelf, so is DM cassette tape and Oasis coaster which I bought at HMV years ago. Recently I finally made my working space at home from scratch and I'm quite happy with it.

My CDs are now just a chaotic mess. I think I'll get rid of a load of them when I move house. So few of them hold any actual significance to me, fun as they were at the time.
I've got all my dad's records because he didn't want to take them when he emigrated. The box of singles is awesome - mostly mid-60s, lots of bands I'd never heard of - but the albums are generally from a bit later on and on Spotify anyway. I did make a half-arsed effort at ripping them a few years ago but a combination of my rubbish equipment and the source being 50 years old didn't make for great results, so I started getting what I could from YouTube instead where people with better stuff had put them up. I'll do that properly once I've moved.

My main collection is in 3 shelves, double rows, according to my list I own a measly 527 CDs, including those I bashfully hide. I more or less separate them in oldies & special favorites in shelf 1, (Greater) Manchester bands and artists in shelf 2 and the rest in shelf 3. Of course, finding something can be tricky sometimes! And I have two separate places for my eldest loves, like REM, Nirvana etc. Also, very annoyingly, those that are too big are stacked in an extra shelf, like WBTM. I guess Noel did that deliberately, because he somehow found out that I put his other HFBs chronologically between the BEs/Liam's album. So now WBTM lies on top of my second AYW CD. (As the delivery was a nightmare I ended up with 3 copies and gave away just one.)

I keep all my music on my laptop and iPhone - I have never gotten rid of anything. My collection dates back to 2003 when I was 15 so I have some quite embarrassing things in my archive!
I keep everything because I love the connection music has with memories so listening to those embarrassing artists and tracks from 15 years ago prompt very strong recollections. An emotionally musical time machine. Love that.

I don't buy CDs anymore. I used to rack them alphabetically by band name, and then in release order now they are stored in boxes and such but I do have a bunch of them at my parents house still

Well I'm the midst of rearranging things at the moment. I've got the same ikea 4 shelf box as you probably and 3 of the spaces fit records (1 is just oasis, the other 2 for everything else).
The issue I'm having is with my CDs. I'm running out of space and more importantly, time to enjoy them all. See, sometime last year I had 3 profoundly depressing realizations:
1 - there will always be more music to enjoy than time to enjoy it 2 - I will never have more time than I do now to enjoy it (no kids to look after), and even now I have less time than I did when I was in my 20s 3 - for every new album I buy and listen to, it is time that I could listen to one of my many favourites that also want to listen to
I ran some numbers and found that I have 404 albums, mostly CD but lots of vinyl too. Of those 404, 124 (31%) have been listened to 9 times or less over the past 6 years and 36 (9%) had been listened to less than 5 times! Many albums get listened to once a year, even though I very much enjoy them.
I also calculated that 404 albums collected over 20 years works out to 1.68 albums a month!
So I've decided to not buy any more for a while. I want to be able to enjoy what I have properly. I'll probably get Weller's new one and then nothing else for 6 months (unless I find some Oasis of Verve rarity). I've realized that just because I like or enjoy something does not mean I have to own it. Though the collector in me keeps imaging how nice everything would look all together!

How I've currently got my CDs stacked is on two tower racks. Going to arrange it as one for British/UK artists and one for North American artists.
First tower -oasis (just the albums, have another area for singles) -verve and related -the jam and Weller -Buzzcocks -smiths and related -clash -Travis -the cure -Bowie -ride -manic street preachers
Second: -Neil young (quite a few albums here!) -smashing pumpkins -the Ramones -Weakerthans (local band) -Sloan -Bryan Adams (because we like him in canada) -goo goo dolls (from 86-98 they were great) -Ryan Adams
I may also use a smaller rack for my classic punk essentials (Iggy, stooges, blondie, damned, stiff little fingers, sex pistols, bad brains etc) where I only have 1 album by each

Nice. That's an awesome Marshall stack there. Can you rail on that without your neighbors wanting to give you hell? Thanks! It's a Lead 15 Micro Stack, and it holds a lot of sentimental value. My late father bought it for me in 2001 or 2002 when I was 13 or 14. (He passed when I was 15.) As for the specs, it's solid state, so I can crank it without bothering the neighbors. The AC30, on the other hand… 😈

Peace. Thanks, brother. My record collection started with his, as well. When I was in high school, well before the vinyl renaissance, I started buying a few used Dylan records here and there to fill in the gaps of my dad's Dylan collection. He had original copies of Dylan records from 'The Times They Are A-Changin'' to 'Slow Train Coming', but was missing a bunch. Apart from the Dylan, he had a small, but solid, collection—including an original US pressing of 'Sgt. Pepper', Gram Parsons' 'Grievous Angel', 'Rumours', Eagles' 'Greatest Hits 71-75', 'The Last Waltz', 'Let it Bleed', and a personal favorite, Meco's disco 'Star Wars'. (You have to hear it to believe it.) From there, it became a question of, "What would my dream record collection look like?" Alright, enough with the sentimentality… what would you say are some records every vinyl enthusiast must have in his or her collection?

what would you say are some records every vinyl enthusiast must have in his or her collection? Oh man I've been wrestling with that question for nearly 15 years, trying to pick up all the classics along the way. Eventually I realized there are always more "must have" albums and I felt like I didn't have the time to enjoy the records I really loved already because I was trying to fill in all the gaps for ones I'd never even heard yet. As a result I'm a lot more picky about what I'll buy, especially on vinyl where the cost is much higher. I tend to just buy new albums by my favourite artists now.

That said, I still absolutely love that feeling of discovering new music that really makes an impact on you.
I didn't want my last post to give the impression that I don't care to listen to anything new. I'm just increasingly short on space, money, and time for records. I can handle being short on money and space for records but it really hurts me when I haven't got time to listen to at least 1 album a day, all the way through. I rely on that to fuel my day.

Alright, enough with the sentimentality… what would you say are some records every vinyl enthusiast must have in his or her collection? I've got about 300 records, mostly bought in the seventies. Some are quite collectable now. As well as a wall rack of CDs. None so nicely displayed or well organized as some others here lol. I think must have is so particular to taste that I really wouldn't know how to characterise that. Do have some favorites though that imo just sound so much better on vinyl. Jimi Hendrix - Cry of Love soundtrack. Out of print for a long time. Songs were distributed amongst various CD reissues. It seems this was eventually re-released. The Jackson 5 Greatest Hits. The original title from Dec 71. Bought shortly after release. Still love this as much as I did as a kid. Any of the first 4 or 5 Terry Kath era Chicago records. The clarity of these was always astounding to me and seemed quite unique at the time. Also lots of old blues records. BB King, Muddy, Johnny Winter, Lightnin' Hopkins and of course the usual (Beatles, Who, Stones) suspects. Don't pull this stuff out often though. Usually special occasions with old friends who deeply regret that they complied with a wife's request to get rid of their collections

I started buying CDs when I was about 10 ( Beatles 62-66 was my first). When I was a teenager, I started collecting vinyl but went back to CDs quite quickly because I couldn't get any new albums on that format. I have 100s of Cds that just sit in boxes under my house. Lots of them are in quite bad shape from my flatting/student party days. In my late 20's I pretty much stopped buying physical music but I always missed going out and buying an album, reading the liner notes etc. About two years ago I jumped back on the vinyl bandwagon and I am quite into it now. It's nice to get back into collecting music* around 150 now). I still don't have any Oasis though. I dont like the look of the Chasing the Sun gatefolds. Don't know why they would change the original artwork.

First album I bought was Definitely Maybe. 25 years later this is where I’m at: No idea how many albums I have, but it’s a few thousand. All arranged alphabetically then chronologically of course, unlike some of the animals around here ;-P X
