I'm one of the traditionalists who really likes the manager of the national team to be of the same nationality. So I want an English manager, but there's not many around, are there?
Mind you, I had a soft spot for Sven who did relatively well. But looking back, he should have accomplished more with the 'Golden Generation.' Missed opportunity.
What a mess our national team is right now. No one plays for the shirt, for the nation any more.
Sign of the times, really.
Don't think we'll see an English team better than the one from 1996 - 2006 in our life time.
Venables, Hoddle, Eriksson. Top.

Top. hoddle is by far the best englishmen theyve had in 30 years. and the media did a number on him aswell...the more years go by, the more i realise the english tabloids are the three lions' biggest issue. even more than the mediocre players they produce. and totally agree a manager (and even back room staff) should be from the nation theyre working for. seems ridiculous that they dont have to be... the 'golden generation' werent that great. not all, but mainly just alot of hype really...started by? who else...

Beady’s Here Now Really ? I'm pretty sure it could happen. 1996-2006 was a team full of missed opportunities. Only a single semi final in 1996 at home, and a bunch of quarter finals that could've been won. Pretty consistent, but no exploit.

well, he is english, so being over-rated is a given. the point was hes the best england have had to offer for decades. hes certainly better than venables, hodgson, mclaren, pearce, both taylors, keegan and big sam...or no? looks like southgate can join that list now too... only my opinion obviously.

He took a team that got to the semi final in euro 96 and managed to get them all the way to the first knock out stage of France 98. He had done nothing in management before he got the job and has done nothing since. Yet people still rave about him.

FA ready to talk to Ralf Rangnick. www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2016/09/29/german-ralf-rangnick-wants-another-chance-to-pitch-for-england-j/Considering the fact that appointing any English manager (whether that be dopey Hodgson or Fat Sham) is not so much as setting the bar low, but digging a hole and throwing the said bar into a pit, Rangnick is an inspired choice. Astute, clever, has big ideas and assisted in reforming grassroots in Germany over a decade ago which reaped its rewards with a World Cup victory, he's the type of man that any football nation in the doledrums with any sense of self-respect would want to hire. He'd shake up the order in English football and if the FA give him a chance to dictate the footballing policy of grassroots coaching in England, then you might just see a man who'd be able to drag the country out of its neanderthal culture. An open minded man of high culture and a cerebral nature, he is quite obviously the man for England. So obviously the English won't touch him with a barge pole. Ladies and gentleman, please welcome Steve Bruce....
