Listened to it 5 times now since last night's iTunes download (waited for the exact moment til it was available).
1st impression: WTF. The picture of the Stacey brothers in the gatefold sleeve! Haha didn't expect that at all.
2nd impression: I wish BOTMI wasn't released as a single before the album's release because I think I would have literally creamed in my pants listening to it as the concluding song on the album for the first time. I can only imagine how much more impressed I'd be with the album in that scenario.
Anyhow, the track rankings:
Ballad of the Mighty I - one of the best Noel's ever written
Lock all the Doors - love the Buzzcocks feel, its so loud and in your face, terrific chorus
The Right Stuff - can't get enough of this, its just incredible
While the Song... - to me, it sounds like what Falling Down was meant to be. Falling Down, all grown up.
You Know We Can't... - Sad but epic, has a very modern, sleek feel I didn't expect
Riverman - Very different from what I was expecting (Saxophone = Springsteen) but I really like it
The Dying of... - Still can't beleive I heard this in a soundcheck at an early HFB gig. Moodier than I predicted it would turn out, reminds me more of Weeping Willow though.
Girl with X Ray Eyes - A funny one, a bit ordinary at times, but momentous and lifting at times
The Mexican - the crack kid lyric is terrible, chorus a bit too BRMC but a decent song for sure still
In the Heat... - Never was too keen on it but it's alright. Still can't figure out what Noel says at the beginning.
The first 5 in this list are incredible, the next four are pretty good, the last is just okay. Loving the album. I'm not sure if I should say this and wade into these waters, but I think this album complements BE nicely, both albums experiment and stretch their sounds further than usual with some lovely atmospherics too.

When it got to Mighty I and the bassline kicked in, fuck me, it was sensational. Really got the blood flowing to the groin region. I know it doesn't get much love here, but for me it's one of the best songs Noel has ever produced. Right up there with his DM and WTSMG masterpieces.

My friend just got the album, and he's a massive Noel fan. I sent him the leak but he refused to listen to it.
