I actually feel very sorry fo Lillywhite for working with such a bunch of luddites. As for Andy Bell, grow up man - The Beat Goes On didn't suck because Lillywhite was at the helm.
If I was Lillywhite I would have thrown all those classic albums I'd produced on to the table saying 'look, I think you'd better take my advice'.
Sadly, Beady Eye were still living in a world where Harold Wilson was prime minister and flowers were cool. Lillywhite's albums are straightforward produced, but my god, it made him look avant-garde in comparison with the lumbering dadrock of Different Gear.

As I expected this became a Beady Eye-bashing thread.

Different Gear was mostly terrible and maybe Lillywhite has been unfairly criticised but he did walk off leaving Gem to do the mixing, he was getting paid to do a job and then bailed if Liam is right, that's weak imo, he should have made sure his job was done whether he liked the product or not

As I expected this became a Beady Eye-bashing thread. i don't think we're bashing them. all i know is that i have friends in bands and that i don't bullshi t them. honest opinions and constructive criticisms are what keeps the music grounded and real. even the best musicians need to be brought down to earth every so often. beady eye's first album was dull. i think that can be more or less agreed on. they needed to be pushed. if the fans don't speak up and push them, they'll only keep releasing table scraps and think that's what the fans want. we know they can do better than their first album. lillywhite knew it too, and rightfully spoke up about it. they were just too obtuse and stubborn to care. Actually I really liked it, still listen to it, and I know many here still like it quite a bit. Plus, it's not like all the media hated it. Just read S.T. Erlewine's review at AllMusic, then read his review of NGHFB later. You'll be surprised.

Lillywhite is clearly grasping onto the coat-tails of the BE & FOTF hype. The fact that he @'d them in his tweet he knew what he was in for with replies surely? #BeadyEye was only trending the other day. He maybe had a point with the original tweet but should have left it there I think. He is taking it too far now with the response to Andy though. He isn't. Andy had a dig, SL is having a pop back. Fair's fair. To be honest, I love the fact SL speaks his mind. That's something we praise Liam and Noel for. Why are we holding Lillywhite to a different standard? Right, you hairbrained submissive, no one's denying anyone's right to vent-- hell, everyone's allow to it (erm, Jesus's remonstrance on them money-fuckers at the Temple, yes!?); but what we are holding up for criticism is Lillywhite's initial presumption and, now we know, its fallacy--- erroneous reasoning, conceived through an implicit supposition of some further proposition in his mind for a slight(?). And not to mention his perpetuating this. So fuck 'im. But I'm sure you got more hilariously biting! fan fiction to write, so I'll let you go on.

This is priceless... Andy got him with the x factor comment, grovelling to Cowell to let him on his TV show is pitiful, I really hope Liam lays into him now tbh...

What does a producer actually do anyway? (Serious question)
Seems it can range from being very involved with creative process of making the music: say Weatherall on Screamadelica or The AA with Noel, to someone who does practically nothing: I read Rick Rubin only nips into the studio at the end of the day, listens to the recordings then leave a note saying "less treble, more bass".
(I may be paraphrasing there or possibly even dreamt that...)

producers usually don't do the mixing. engineers do, on the most part. Yeh I thought that, maybe Liam meant to say something else but I think he still left early because he obviously wanted out Sounds to me like Lillywhite is saying there is more to the story which is what he is getting at. Wasn't as simple as him just leaving, I think. Obviously there was a lot to it that Liam didn't tell us. Just the bit that makes Lillywhite sound the worst without any sort of explanation of why he would have done that. I really wish BDI had kept their mouth shut. Lillywhite has nothing to lose. It means nothing to him if he gets put in the papers about this. BDI are trying to get attention on their new album. As far as I can see no music media has picked up on it yet. I think everyone should just leave it and hope it goes away. No good can come from a post-mortem on DGSS. The less said about it the better IMO

PS nnyrad: possibly the best post I have ever seen on this forum ever. Bring back karma ;-) Great great stuff!! Worthy of a fan fiction deal on nme.com, ya know, for one of "satirical" pieces that comes with the accompanying photos that they pulled out every now and then on their site when there's no Noel and Liam pieces!!! Great great stuff indeed.

Steve is too much of a pro to have "bailed" on BDI.
I think Liam got too arrogant and asked him to leave because he was the only one who had the courage to tell him that the songs blew.
Now that the album flopped - Liam is blaming it on the producer. Typical of Liam, everybody's fault but mine.

You know that's not true, Liam has said many times that DGSS was rushed and that the songs weren't there, he's not just criticised the producer like you said. Don't be the same complete cretin that hfp was
