maybe you should try to backup your files and do a clean XP install. is your HDD divided in partitions? you can try booting with Hiren's Boot. there's a "mini windows XP". you can open a explorer there and copy your files from one partition to the other.

Trouble is Eva I cant get into Windows to do anything at all-chkdsk runs immediately, wont let you stop it. Trawled every thread on the net about this not uncommon prob. Have the command to stop chkdsk but cant get to a command line: it wont go into safe mode cos chkdsk starts too quick. I have rebooted from the XP cd which gets me into recovery option, which would have a command line. BUT windows wants Admin p/w which I dont know and which the seller says he didnt set. So in short....buggerred...............catch 22 Am inclined to rebook with manufacturers Recovery disc, restore factory settings and accept what I lose BUMMER

no, no. you have to boot from cd with this www.hiren.info/pages/bootcdwhen it boots, you'll see an option "Mini Windows XP". It's an emulator. when you enter there you can access a Windows Explorer and see your files

hey mar, this might sound daft but trust me I've seen this happen before. When you boot the thing up with the XP disc and you get to the recovery console and then it asks you for the password, have you tried just hitting enter? If there has indeed been no password set, it will still ask you for a password anyway.

Thanks for all input
Went for factory reset..............wiping hdd
Now got net connection and most all working
Only thing I cant sort is device mgr reports no drivers for "multimedia processor"-have rerinstalled Realtek AC97 but still showing not working
Havent yet worked out implications of that issue, too busy reloading antivirus, printer, etc etc
Spose I shgould try plaing a dvd?
Mebbe tomorrow
