I don't think Noel's the best songwriter of all time tbf. That would be Paul McCartney for me, followed by Lennon and Noel.

IMO Noel, Lennon/McCartney don't even come close to Bob Dylan

Lennon/McCartney are the best. It's no contest, really.
Noel would get my vote for most underrated songwriter of all time. He's not even mentioned in the U.S. for being one of the best songwriters of the 90's. Which is a shame...

Noel would get my vote for most underrated songwriter of all time. THIS! Why is it that he (and Oasis along with it) are so underrated? If I mention his name in Belgium hardly 1/10 will know who he is, or even less!

It's simple, the Beatles were there first, so they became more famous than Noel could ever become. I also guess there are more people who know the name Oasis than people who know the name Gallagher. It's the same thing with many popular bands.

Dylan is a phenomenal songwriter. Lennon/McCartney is actually TWO songwriters, so they don't really count, do they? And Noel is GOD is England but outside of that, no one knows who he is at all.
My personal list goes: -Macca -Noel -Dylan -John Denver

Looked at the comments on that link, somebody said they thought it was between Pharrell Williams and Damon Albarn. What a load of utter shite.

ahahaha, I don't think that Noel is the best songwriter of all time, but by voting him #1, he could've scratched the top 10 . I figured that McCartney/Lennon and Dylan were going to be in the Top 5 anyways (as they should be), so by voting for Noel to be #1, in theory you were only for him to be in the top 10.

not knocking on noel's talents, to put him among such songwriters as brian wilson, bob dylan, stevie wonder, lennon/mccartney, paul simon, holland/dozier/holland, pete townshend, neil young and smokey robinson is absurd.

How can someone's opinion concerning a COMPLETELY subjective topic ever be viewed as "absurd"? You stating what you did is actually absurd, and also 100% ignorant if I might add. Songwriting, or any type of writing for that matter, is unique to how it connects to the individual reader, or in this case the listener. A songwriter like Jon Andersen (some of you may know him from a little band called Yes) is not going to appeal to most people of this generation, who for the most part would not likely relate to his lyrics and writing style. But does this make him any less talented or any less of a writer according to the listener with whom he makes a strong connection? Let's say, for example, to someone like my father who happens to love and respect his (Anderson) lyrics more than those of Lennon/McCartney? Noel Gallagher, through his songwriting and his voice, connects with me almost entirely as an individual. His lyrics and his music speak to my heart, soul, body, and mind on just about every conceivable level. He is my favorite songwriter of all-time by a country mile, as well as my favorite singer. So in my view, he is the best to ever walk the earth. If I could only listen to one man's songs for the rest of my life, HE IS THAT MAN. How can you honestly sit there and label my feelings (opinions) as absurd? Whatever happened to individuality? Rolling Stone could make a list of the 100 greatest songwriters, and I would probably never listen to well over half of the artists on that list, how "absurd" is that?

I agree with you. I'm not saying that Noel is the greatest. I def. would not say that. I'd just like to see him get a bit of recognition. But there are def a few songwriters that I would rate higher than Noel.

First off, that was one of the best and most genuine posts I've read on here in a while. Well said oasiskid! I also believe, quite firmly, Noel to be the greatest songwriter of all time. I mean really, how many songwriters have 70 plus songs that you would regularly spin in your playlist? Of course, that is only my opinion. What you said about all of this being subjective is completely accurate. No one can sit here and tell me that your, or anyone else for that matter, opinion is wrong. Music is art, and art is open to interpretation, there is no way to claim one artist/songwriter greater than another as there is no way to prove such a case. This isn't a sport where you can claim one player is greater than another and prove it with statistics. It is purely subjective and can not be proven one way or another. I know people who claim Bruce Springsteen is the greatest songwriter of all time. I think he is terrible. Does that make those people wrong? Of course not. It is their opinion. This is why all these All-Time Greatest lists are a complete joke to me. Don't give me my heroes, I'll choose them for myself thanks.

Who says there is is some objective truth about who is the greatest songwriter of all time. There isn't. This is actually just a straw poll of peoples favorite songwriters. There is no objective truth in it. If more people like music written by Prince than Leonard Cohen...does that make Prince objectively better? I don't think so. But would I ever sit someone down that loves Prince and tell them..."you do realise that objectively Leonard Cohen is a better songwriter...even if you don't like his music...he is objectively better" I don't accept that if I don't like the output of a songwriter I have to accept the fact that he is objectively a great songwriter. I can accept that others do think he is great...but if I really don't like it acknowledgeing that is just buying into to someone elses hype which is even worse than buying into your own. For instance, my brother actually doesn't like the Beatles. And no matter what tune he listens to he really doesn't think it's great. My brother isn't close-minded and he likes many genres of music including 50-60's rock 'n roll but he doesn't think that Lennon/McCartney tunes are THAT amazing. I know he isn't one of those that hates things because they are popular just to be different. Should I be sitting down and telling him..."You do realise that Lennon/McCartney were objectively the best songwriters in history. I know that they aren't to your taste...but they are objectively great. Even you must admit that" Doesn't that sound pretentious? What bollocks!
