He can play the bits he has written and all covers sounded good too. He hasn't often screwed up live yet, so it's good enough for me

He plays everything right 99℅ of the time and that's all that matters. I don't want to hear him playing Van Halen-esque ten minute solos.

'Gas Panic!' is quite a difficult song to play. I think songs like that go unnoticed in guitar magazines. People also regularly underestimate how modest Noel is about his own guitar playing

He dedicates more of his time perfecting tones and sounds instead of getting crazy with the guitar.

Noel's guitar playing is pretty basic, but he's an amazing songwriter.
God bless.

Look. Noel is not or will ever be ( he admits this) eddie v , slash , page. , ect ect .....he is more in the keith Richards vain , keith loves a second guitarist mick taylor , wood , of course jones , he is a damn good guitar player , not a guitar virtuoso , but Oasis were never about guitar virtuoso save that for the masters like Eddie V. Page , ect ectv, noel just wrote and made sure his part was played the way the tune was intended do , no need to fill ,, Oasis was about the tunes the attitude not the solo
,and he couldn't fill , not his style , I love both styles , but eddie v wouldn't fit in oasis , and noel certainly couldn't lead Van halen ,,,yet both rocked. , they did there job so he is very good
My opinion on his so.o work not withstanding. I love noel no MATTER

Noel is a decent guitarist (good enough for his style of music) and he is a brilliant songwriter. As for guitar solos, that twat doesn't know what he's talking about. Champagne Supernova's solo may not be technically difficult but it sounds like the dogs bollocks - which frankly is all that matters.

He's a decent guitarist.
You can probably play half of Oasis' songs by learning the chords: G Em B7 C D and the pentatonic scale (and a capo!)
But that is not what matters, is it?
He can write, sing, and play great rock songs and that's all that matters.

I think the guitar part during the 2nd verse of In The Heat Of The Moment is great

I would never describe Noel as a particularly good guitarist, but he's the type that can surprise you once in a while. Some of his solos are great, Live Forever, D'You Know What I Mean, Roll It Over.... Sorry for replying to old message but Roll It Over solo is played by Paul Stacey.

CBA to reread the entire thread but it's going to be subjective isn't it? If you are talking technical ability in say a rock style like Steve Vai or a range of diverse influences like John Frusciante then probably not, but for contributions that compliment his and other people's songs that he has recorded then I would say yes, he is a good guitarist.

Who is a good guitarist? For me, Eddie VH, Steve Vai, etc are good guitar players but in their own style of music. Personally, I don´t like their style, it doesn´t make me feel anything at all (just like crazy, but skilled, metal players).
Noel is the most suitable guitarist for Oasis and his solo project. Do you really imagine a crazy guitar solo in Riverman, Live Forever, Slide Away? Noel has written beautiful guitar solos to his own songs, and they fit perfectly. It comes to my mind the Knebworth performance, in which John Squire plays the solo in Champagne Supernova. I never liked his solo, it doesn´t fit, is not his style, and he improvised something that doesn´t match with the song.
Noel proved to be a good guitarist during his acoustic solo performances as well.
If he would play with Pearl Jam, of course is skills are not for them, but, at the same time, I don´t see Mike McCready doing what Noel does in Oasis or NGHFB.
Noel does what is needed for the song, and that makes him a good guitarist, not a crazy/soul-less guitar solo.

There was never any call for flamboyant fretboard-wanking in Oasis.

There was never any call for flamboyant fretboard-wanking in Oasis. What's wrong with a good ol' fashioned fretboard Thomas The Tank? You a fucking ivor the engine fan?

Isn't Fretboard-Wanking a village in Yorkshire or summat? Aye, twinned with this place in Germany IIRC

The simple fact is that Noel's songs / solos etc.. might be realtively simple to play (although even thats not a fair statment for a lot of his songs) but at the end of the day, he is the only one who put those notes in the right order to find the combinations for Live Forever, Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall etc... Nobodody else did (apart from the obvious rip offs of course!) and thats the key point for me over any "techncial" ability really!

You know what else makes him a good guitarist?
He has his own sound. When you hear him, you know it's him. Even though Oasis did some rip offs themselves, you'd always know it's them, which is not something every guitarist, let alone band, can say.

technically maybe he's not particularly good (remember he's left handed). Noel is defintely distinctive and has wrote iconic riffs and solos, that's harder than being a great player. He's nowhere near as good as say Johnny Marr but has Marr came up with anything like Live Forever, DLBIA, MG

NG has banged out memorable riffs and solos, a lot of it may sound alike and be similar to play but they're iconic. Marr is a better guitar player no doubt but he doesn't have standout solos.
