I really don't get the whole you have to be a "technically" good guitarist to be considered a great guitarist. I don't know how many of you watched Santana on American Idol the other night but regardless of how he can slide up and down the fret board, his style is just fuckin awful. I'll take my guitarist playing melodic lines and fills any day over a guy like Santana who just whales up and down with noise

I think Noel is a great musician...meaning overall just a good guitarist, good songwriter, good bandmember. Not worth criticizing every solo he's done...all that matter's is that he turns out great tunes. Fuck cares how he looks or who plays in what style, its just great music.

Noel isnt amazing, but hes makes up for it with the songs he wrote, you could be the best guitarist in the world and not write songs that good.

Not only did Noel write the songs, but he INVENTED the solos for Live Forever and DLBIAnger - thats the difference. For them alone, and even if he never picked up the guitar ever again, he will always be a great guitarist. And god bless him for it

Just because other guitarist might be better, doesn't mean Noel isn't a good guitar player. If you play lead guitar in a band as big as Oasis, you're a good guitarist. End of discussion.

End of discussion. by those standards, bjorn ulvaeus of abba is one of the best guitarists of all time. it's a slippery slope. Agree. How big the band is, has nothing to do with how good of a guitarist you are. I would say that Noel is a decent guitarist. He has a good bag of tricks which makes him look better than what he is, but in the end he's only a decent guitarist.

For me, guitarist need to add to the song versus dominate it. Noel has always placed his solos appropriately within the song to enhance them, and that is part of what makes him great.
Is he the most gifted, or talented at moving his fingers? No, probably not, but it doesn't matter, because he has played on some of the best tracks to ever be released by any artist ever.
Too much is made of "good" guitarist as though no one but a select few actually can garnish the honor. Most of the most famous guitar solos/riff are also some of the easiest to play. It means nothing really.

It means nothing really. Yes, but its also the ability to conceive those easy riffs and solos that makes a guitarist great. Sometimes the easiest things, are the hardest to think up. It takes great knowledge of the guitar to think up anything great. Whether it's easy or not. If you don't have the knowledge to be able to think those "simple" notes up, then how good are you really. There's a difference between someone who can work within the confines of a song and a person who is a great guitarist. Working within the confines of a song (which is what you're describing), is someone being a great songwriter, not someone being a great guitarist. There is a difference.

I don't see the difference. Re-read you post and you will see that you argue against yourself. I'm kind of confused as to what your point is?

I don't see the difference. Re-read you post and you will see that you argue against yourself. I'm kind of confused as to what your point is? The point I'm making is that you said that Noel is good or great because he adds to the song or works within the confines of it, rather than dominates it. My ultimate point is that what you're describing isn't being a great guitarist, it's being a great songwriter. It's the mindset. A great songwriter thinks "how can this guitar add to the song.". Which is why he is a songwriter. A great guitarist thinks "how can I build around this guitar.". Both are thinking about making a song, but they're thinking by different mindsets. One of "how can this guitar make this song better", the other "how can this guitar riff make a song". Normally that's not enough to tell you whether he's a great guitarist or not. It just tells you how he thinks. But he's never shown a higher capacity for any type of guitar knowledge. Which is what I was talking about with simple riffs and solos. People mistake "simple" with "easy". That's not the case with guitar. The most "simple" things in guitar take the greatest understanding and knowledge. Whether something is "simple" to learn or not, doesn't matter when it comes to the greatness of the guitarist. It's the knowledge that it took to make it, that makes him great. Many times the most "simple" things take the greatest knowledge to create. It's the knowledge and the ability to execute that knowledge which makes a guitarist great. I never said that Noel wasn't a great guitarist because he doesn't do hard riffs and solos. I just don't think he has the mindset of a guitarist, nor does he the knowledge or feel for that matter, that a great guitarist should have. He's just a great songwriter who can at least understand how to incorporate a guitar within his songs. Take drumming. Noel has played drums on some pretty good Oasis songs. He hasn't dominated any of them, just added to them, and he's thought up some good fills. Would anyone call him a great drummer? No. So why use that criteria for guitar?

^All are valid points. I do think that the two ,songwriting/guitar playing, go hand-in-hand to create a great guitarist. After all, isn't how you "use" your equipment that defines your level of expertise/knowledge on it?
Your last point comes across as though you equate "knowledge" to being a great guitarist, when in fact, most people would argue that "skill or dexterity" equate to being great. I know plenty of people who can spout of "knowledge" about a myriad of topic, and even instruments, but that doesn't not make them "great" at them, or even proficient for that matter.
Out of curiosity, who does everyone think are "great" guitarists, "good" guitarists, and "average" guitarists? I think this might help us all understand a bit better where we are coming from. Mine are: Slash is great, Noel is good, and someone like say Billy Joe Armstrong would be average.

I think I had it in there, but I must have accidentally edited out through my editing. I'll go and edit that in right now.

Great guitarists: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Slash, Jeff Beck, and Les Paul Good guitarist: Jack White, Jimmy Page, and George Harrison Average guitarist: Noel Gallagher, Pete Townsend (some Who fans might kill me) Below average: Billy Joel Armstrong Just can't find a way to say that Noel is as good as Jimmy Page, or Jack White, or even George Harrison. Who is a supremely underrated guitarist.
