LONDON (Reuters) - Former Manchester United player George Best is in intensive care in a London hospital with a kidney infection, his agent said on Monday.
"He has a kidney infection brought on by a reaction to the treatment he has been receiving for his liver," agent Philip Hughes told Reuters. "He has responded to treatment and is better than he was when he was admitted."
Belfast-born Best, regarded by many as the greatest player ever to come from the British Isles, has had an alcohol problem for much of his life and underwent a liver transplant in 2002 after years of heavy drinking.
The 59-year-old had a dazzling but relatively short career at Manchester United, winning the European Cup in 1968 when he was named European Footballer of the Year.
But his career nosedived when he left United aged just 26 and he has remained dogged by alcohol problems.

i have absolutely no time for george best
the man in his time was given chance after chance with transplants and he threw it back in the faces of those who gave it
he was given organ transplants and proceeded to fuck them up with alcohol... he skipped queues because of his celebrity status
other people who needed them, and would have acted repsonsibly with them given the opportunity, deserved them much more than George Best proved himself to

It's sad like. The man's a legend, one of the best players ever.

I agree with Feck to be honest. Why should people shorten their lives for that drunk, womanising prick. Fuck him. And he played for Man Utd.

My dad was in hospital for two months last year because of his liver and kidneys were starting to fail, not because of drinking cos he wouldn't drink alcohol unless he was out on a saturday or something. He is still ill and has to take 12 pils a day.
And then you see George Best, makes me sick, he should hurry up and die and let someone else who would appreciate it, the medical treatment he has been getting.

Alcoholism is a disease in the same way that bulimia is. To sling insults at a man for having a disease is naive at the least. It is believed that alcoholism is actually hereditary. With George Bests mother being an Alcoholic it is quite possible he inherited this disease.

And he has had so much treatment to help him combat his disease and he just goes back to his own ways. To give him a liver transplant when there are more worthy people waiting.
If my dad's liver gets any worse ( and he's not a drinker ) then he may need a transplant and perhaps that may not happen cos someone like George Best gets it, forgive me for being bitter .

I understand that there are people more deserving of treatment than George Best but i was just making the point that it isn't as black and white as people seem to think. You aren't automatically an idiot for being an alcoholic, that was all. I hope your dad’s liver doesn’t get any worse.

If you haven't already read it, read his autobiography 'Scoring at half-time'. One of the best ones I've ever read. Great stories.

I think is sad but at the end of the day who is to blamne but himself? Is self-inflicted.
He's like Maradonna or Gazza (before they were who they were): A great talent who could do it all naturally and so thought it would last forever and pissed it away. Still I always liked this quote:
"I spent 90% of my money on women and drink. The rest of it I wasted."
How sad that it's come to this. AGAIN.

mans a fucking prick, cares for no one spot on. he even said on the frank skinner show that the person he got the liver off, didnt leave a set of rules saying how he should behave so thats his justification for drinking after the op. No time for him at all.

I hope he dies very soon, waste of space, sad old alcholic.
The family of the donor must be so pleased that it went to a worthy cause.
