I have been reading the international press regarding Jay - Z's performance and overall everybody seemed to love his set. On the other hand I read mixed reviews regarding Jay - Z's move to open the set with Wonderwall. Was this more of a mocking or defiant move on his part? What's everybody's take on it and could you see Oasis doing something similar to a band they had a feud with ?

Noel had it coming, really. It was funny, but I don't think it got the response Jay-Z was quite hoping for.

I remeber oasis singing blur when they accepted one of their brit awards in 1996.
Couldn't see them doing it at a gig though.

It was funny, but a little too over the top I think to open the set with the whole song. People obviously enjoyed it, but not really on the level that I think Jay-Z was hoping for. It was more of a standard Wonderwall singalong it seemed instead of a knock on Noel and his music (a-la Radiohead's rendition of the same song) or (what would have been even better from a fuck you standpoint) a hip-hop rendition of an Oasis standard. He could have even changed a lyric or two from one of his own songs to diss Oasis. I can think of about a thousand ways he could have been a little more creative and clever about it, but I think it was a miss on his part if he was trying to respond to Noel's statement.

When I first read about the wonderwall cover I thought he'd have made his own version of wonderwall, hip hop like...
Can't really call his humming on the original tune a cover, can you

I agree with Castle - changing one of his own lyrics to make a subtle diss at Oasis would have been much more creative, or even change an Oasis lyric around - like how Liam sang "shit life" making fun of Blur in 1996
Probably over half of the people in attendance didn't even get it, cause they would have had to pay attention to music news on that one day
I actually think this was pretty low and not at all classy from Jay Z. Noel hardly said anything, and it wasn't even directed to Jay Z himself. Noel may have had deserved this type of rendition in the past, but not this time 'round.
And overall, I think Jay Z failed. Miserably. He picked the most popular Oasis song to play, and he played it at what is primarily a rock festival, in England, where there are many Oasis fans. The sing-a-long proved Oasis' likeability and popularity, and thus an EPIC FAIL on Jay Z's part to prove otherwise.
In fact, one of my friends who only likes rap and likes Jay Z told me he thought Jay Z did this out of respect and tribute to Oasis!!!! Clearly Jay Z failed.
Again, Noel and Liam may be more harsh and cruel when they slag people off, but paradoxically have more tact, class, humor, and credibility when they do it. And they tend to always get their point across - something which Jay Z failed to do.

You call dissing Noel/Oasis a more creative move? lol
Jay-z would have descended on to a much lower level if he had done that.
I thought his response was very classy to play Wonderwall as the first song. At the start he does sing along in a mock sort of attitude, but then realises quickly that the crowd are really into it and lets them sing the chorus.
Dissing Oasis would have been very very unclassy and then we'd have to hear all your stereotypical bullshit about rapping

I just read some where JayZ had the lowest tickets sales for Glastonbury in a long time...So Noel was right, it was so over hyped it was ridiculous.....

funny thing is that "wonderwall" was the best "music" anyone heard all night. The only credit I'll give jay-z is that he hedged his bet and didn't overplay his hand and really ride into noel on what could be somewhat called noel's "hometurf".
to be honest, I think he could have been a lot worse, rightly or wrongly. I really don't think Jay Z believes noel meant what some are trying to infer anyway and he was just playing up to all the bs.

It was a good idea from his point of view, but it kind of backfired. He was clearly very wound up when the crowd sung their hearts out.

I don't get why people are saying 'he looked mad' and all this crap. Maybe ya'll don't really know Jay-Z, but he always looks like that. I can't stand him and I would love to agree. But it just isn't true. For the fact that he let the crowd sing along by turning the mic to them should tell you that he wasn't that upset with it.
Honestly, if I just saw it without knowing anything that was said by Noel or Jay-Z, I would have thought that he was doing it as a tribute or something.
